As I searched the Internet for educational uses for blogs I was amazed at all the wonderful ideas there are for using blogs in education. There are so many uses for blogs in the classroom and not just for upper level either. Blogs can be used in Elementary, Middle, High Schools and of course College courses.
Some of the ways blogs can be used in education are as follows. As stated from the NCTE (National Center for Technology in Education) website, “From a teacher’s point of view, a blog can become a class notice board, an archive of links and documents or as a collaboration or discussion tool with his/her students. It can also be used by the students as a learning reflection tool.”
Students can use a blog to pretend they are a classroom pet and they would blog about their days in the classroom, the class as a whole could blog about what they are learning, teachers could use a blog to dictate homework assignments, a blog could also be useful to connect two classrooms in different states, there are so many more ideas out there these are just a few.
One really cool idea I found was on the New York Times Website. “Sixth-grade social studies students at Ballard County Middle School talk with Aaron Connor, a Ballard Memorial High School graduate now serving near Ghazni City, Afghanistan, with the Illinois National Guard through the use of a blog.” This is a great way to involve the students in what is happening overseas with our military.
These are just a few ideas for educational uses and blogging. Blogging can give students real world experience.

I totally agree with your statement "blogging can give students real world experience." I think that we've only begun to see the potential for what blogs can do.
ReplyDeleteI've just started using blogs with my students, and was surprised at how little they knew about it. Their only exposure to blogs was primarily through their Myspace pages.
Several of my friends use blogs to post pictures and events within their families, but I am fascinated with the concept of using it in the classroom between teachers and students. I teach Social Studies and love the idea of using a blog to keep students connected with our military. Thanks for sharing!
